Project Characteristics

The project SMIS - Subsea Monitoring via Intelligent Swarms is the development of an innovative system for efficient monitoring of large-scale subsea areas using team-/swarm technology. The funding for the development project has been granted with retroactive effect to 01 January 2013 by The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).

Within SMIS engineers and scientists are working together on a novel concept for autonomous monitoring and investigation of the marine environment based on pressure-neutral technology. Within the project the SMIS-system will comprise of two Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), one sea bottom station (SBS), and one unmanned surface vehicle (USV), which are operated from a research ship, or where required from a land station, using the principles of swarm intelligence. The most prominent unique feature of the SMIS-fleet is its applicability as intelligent team system for large deep sea areas in water depths up to 6.000 m.

In turn of a sub-project Foramex Petroleum And Construction is carrying out the overall project management as well as the specification and/or development of offshore standards, procedures and structural (FE) analyses for the frame structures of all SMIS vehicles. All developments are based on the Basis of Design prepared by Foramex Petroleum And Construction .
